Duarte Nuno Vieira is Full Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra and visiting professor in several other Portuguese, European, Asian and South American universities. He is President of the Ibero-American Network of Forensic Medicine and Forensic Science Institutions, Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Chairman of the Thematic Federation on Legal and Forensic Medicine of the European Union of Medical Specialists, and Vice-President of the European Confederation of Experts on Evaluation and Repair of Bodily Injury. He is also Member of the Scientific Board of the European Institute of Training Evaluation and Repair of Bodily Injury of Paris and member of the group of expert reviewers of the European Science Foundation. He has been President of the International Academy of Legal Medicine, of the International Association of Forensic Sciences, of the World Association of Police Medical Officers, of the European Council of Legal Medicine, of the Mediterranean Academy of Forensic Sciences, and of the Latin American Association of Medical Law, among others. He as also been Director of the Institute of Legal Medicine of Coimbra, President of the Portuguese National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences and of the Portuguese Medico-Legal Council and President of the Portuguese Superior Council of Legal Medicine and of the College of Forensic Medicine of the Portuguese Medical Association.
He works on regular basis as Temporary Forensic Consultant for the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, and he is Member of the Forensic Advisory Board of the International Committee of the Red Cross and of the Forensic Expert Group of the International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims.
He has been, among many others functions, Dean, President of the Scientific and of the Pedagogical Councils and of the Department of Medical Education of the Faculty of Medicine of Coimbra, member of the National Council for Medical Ethics Order of the Portuguese Medical Association, member of the Portuguese National Council of Ethics for the Life Sciences and the National Commission for Civil Protection.etc. .
He as published over 300 articles in scientific journals, he is editor or coeditor of 13 books and authored over 40 chapters in several books, has presented as author or coauthor of over 1.500 works at scientific meetings. He as given, as keynote speaker more than 700 conferences outside of Portugal, in countries of Europe, Asia, Africa, Meddle-East, Australasia, and of the entire American continent. He has received 15 scientific awards and has been awarded with 18 honorary degrees by scientific societies, universities, municipalities and governments of European, Asian, African and Central and South American countries.
He has participated in more than 50 international missions, namely in missions promoted by the United Nations, International Amnesty, European Commission, European Council, International Red Cross, Organisation of the American States, etc. (Brazil, Iraq, Paraguay, Palestine, Nigeria, Moldova, Mexico, Kazakhstan, Colombia, Peru, Kirgizstan, Indonesia, Morocco, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Libya, Tajikistan, Switzerland, Papua New Guinea, East-Timor, Greece, Jordan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Mexico, Macedonia, Ivory Coast, Poland, Palestine, Italy, Ukraine, Kenya, Argentina, Mauritania, Egypt, Mali, Ghana, Tunisia, Argentina, Tajikistan, Mauritania, Turkey, Armenia, Georgia, Bahrain, Mozambique, Philippines, Comores, Serbia, Bahrein, etc.), specially in the field of Human Rights and in the specific area of torture and other cruel, inhuman and degrading treatments or punishments.
